AirPlay is a feature in iPad that can be used to connect to your TV via Apple TV. You can also view two different screens using the two-screen feature to see one thing on your iPad screen and another on your TV.
However, when AirPlay isn’t working, it can be hard to troubleshoot it, though it works on almost similar principles as those used when it doesn’t connect properly.
Below are the troubleshooting fixes you can use to resolve this problem.
How to fix AirPlay not working
Power on AirPlay device or Apple TV
As simple as this may sound, it’s easy to miss it so ensure your Apple TV or AirPlay device is powered on first.
Reboot AirPlay device
Once the device is on, turn off the power by either disconnecting from a power outlet for the Apple TV, or unplugging its cord from the back as there’s no on/off switch. Leave it off for a few seconds before plugging it back in.
Once the TV boots back up, wait until it connects to the network and try AirPlay again.
Check that both devices are connected to the same WiFi
AirPlay connects via WiFi so both your devices have to be on one network for this to work. Check your network connection on your iPad by opening Settings and see the WiFi network name on the left pane. If it’s off, turn it on and connect to the same network as your device.
Check WiFi on your Apple TV through Settings>Network (4th generation Apple TV) or Settings>General>Network for older versions.
Turn on AirPlay
To do this, select Settings>AirPlay to verify that it’s on and the feature is ready to go.
Reboot your iPad
If you still find AirPlay not working, or you can’t find the AirPlay device or Apple TV in your device control panel, reboot the iPad by holding down the Sleep/Wake button till you get the slider prompt to turn it off. Wait till the screen is dark and hold the button down again to power it on.
Reboot router
Rebooting your router helps solve the AirPlay not working issue as it verifies that both devices are on the same network and connected. Rarely does the router become the issue, but you can reboot it if all else fails. Use the on/off switch at the back, or unplug it from the power outlet and wait a few seconds before plugging it back in.
Update router firmware
If the issue persists, you can update the router’s firmware. Check the manufacturer’s manual for the instructions if you’re not sure how to do it.
