Fix: Steam Won’t Open – Windows and Mac Issues

Steam is an ocean of possibilities, games of different genres, perfect for any player out there. It is always great to use, but sometimes you may encounter some errors.

Some users stated that they could not open Steam on Windows 10, even if optimized for the OS. We’re here to help you with this problem.

Here are four ways in which you can fix the Steam error.

For Windows

Command

You may want to use the command that will refresh the installation of the Steam app.

• Open the Run dialogue box. Press the Windows key + R.
• Type in or copy this command: steam://flushconfig
• Press enter
• Press OK.

Enter Safe Mode

Safe Mode only allows essential applications to take action. Safe Mode should solve your problem if there’s a third-party program that messes with Steam. If Steam works in Safe Mode, then there’s a program that does not allow it to work correctly, and you will need to find it and disable it.

To enter Safe Mode,

• Type System configuration  into your search menu, and click on it.
• Go to the boot tab
• A safe boot option will appear in the bottom left.
• Select Safe Boot, and underneath it, select Network.
• The Safe Boot will work after you restart your computer

For Mac

Reinstall Steam

In order to reinstall Steam without actually losing all of your games, you will need to:

• Go to:~/Application Support/Library/Steam
• Delete the folder named Steam.AppBundle
• Launch Steam as usual

Change the settings

Steam should have the Accessibility area enabled. If you see that Steam has problems opening, then this might be one of the causes.

• Press Command + Space, which will open Spotlight.
• Type in Security.
• Go to System Preferences, and choose Security & Privacy.
• Click on Accessibility and find Steam
• Click on the bottom left padlock and type your password.
• Steam should be enabled – it will have its blue box ticked.
• Close the window and open Steam as usual.
