Samsung Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ VoLTE enabled on unlocked Cricket Wireless variants, more devices soon

Mobile tech advances fast. Gone are the days when we would rely on legacy tech like 2G and 3G to make calls. Today, thanks to the higher bandwidth that 4G allows for, we can make calls on 4G with better quality than ever before, thanks to Voice Over LTE (VoLTE).

For VoLTE to work, there are a few key boxes to check. First, your device needs to be VoLTE-capable. Then your carrier also has to support VoLTE and since there are a few different variations of VoLTE, your device needs to support your carrier’s specific VoLTE profile.

Luckily, most current devices (devices launched in the past 4 years or so) do support VoLTE and as such, it is often up to the carrier to upgrade their infrastructure and enable this feature from their end. Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and S9+ from 2018 do support VoLTE.

However, carriers have been a little sluggish when it comes to enabling this feature from their end although this too is beginning to pick up pace. Recently, we have seen AT&T promise to bring HD Voice and more services to unlocked Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel 4 phones via OTA updates.

Not to be left behind, Cricket Wireless is also striving to enable VoLTE on devices on its network. This, starting with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. According to users, VoLTE is working on their unlocked Cricket Wireless variants of the Galaxy S9 and S9+.

This should come as a breath of fresh air to these device-owners seeing as many carriers are in the process of shutting down their legacy 3G network that have been heavily relied on for calls. This, the companies say is in a bid to free up bandwidth that can then be reprovisioned for 5G.

With this, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ join the ever-growing list of devices that are VoLTE-enabled on Cricket Wireless.

Other notable devices on the list include low-end devices from Samsung like:

-Samsung Galaxy A01
-Samsung Galaxy A6
-Samsung Galaxy A10e
-Samsung Galaxy A11
-Samsung Galaxy Amp Prime among many others

Other Samsung devices that support Cricket Wireless’ VoLTE include the following. Also note that this list is set to grow as the carrier adds support for more devices.

-Samsung Galaxy Amp Prime 2
-Samsung Galaxy Amp Prime 3
-Samsung Galaxy Halo
-Samsung Galaxy J2 Pure
-Samsung Galaxy S6 (requires software version G920AZTUU6DQF3 or later)
