Ever since US President Donald Trump passed the order to ban American companies from working with Huawei, the company has been stuck dealing with the repercussions. While Huawei is doing just fine in China, it’s smartphones are no longer recommended in other regions.
This is because Huawei cannot implement Google Play Services on their devices. And by now most of us rely on Google services and applications heavily. Not only smartphones but other product categories from the company have taken a hit.
In order to move ahead, the company decided to develop its own operating platform. Unveiled back in August 2019, HarmonyOS was primarily developed for IoT devices.
But since the restrictions on American companies working with Huawei are still in place, the company is preparing to take the next step. That is to develop and release HarmonyOS for a range of devices. In a new leak posted by a Redditor, we can see the company’s roadmap for HarmonyOS for the next couple of years.
According to the planned roadmap, Huawei is looking to bring HarmonyOS to cars, watches, and computers with version 2.0. Moreover, the company will allegedly announce HarmonyOS version 2.0 at the Huawei Developer Conference on September 11 this year.
In the roadmap, there’s no mention of mobiles. Therefore, we can expect to see the company stick to Android for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, after the company releases the OS for PCs, watches, and cars, it will come to more device categories.
For 2021, Huawei plans on bringing the OS to smart speakers and headphones. Following that, VR glasses and other VR devices will be powered by HarmonyOS in 2022. Coming back to now, it seems Huawei is set to become a lot more self-reliant.
Moreover, having its own operating system will allow the company to optimize and develop apps exclusively for its products. And we may not have to wait long to see HarmonyOS running on various smart devices. As for smartphone updates, you can check out our Huawei Android 10 update tracker.
