Expandable storage is one of the options in Android devices today, but even with this available, some users still report that they face issues with the MicroSD card in their phones. These could range from being unable to move apps to the card, unable to delete anything, or frequent notification popups.
However, you can resolve the problem using some fixes as outlined below.
Fix Android MicroSD card issues
Restart your device
Restarting usually solves issues on your phone, so on your Android device, do the following:
- Press down the volume down and power key buttons and tap Restart
- Once the phone restarts check if your MicroSD card is working properly again.
Check the mounting of the MicroSD card
To do this:
- Tap Apps icon on the home screen of your device
- Now search for My Files and tap on it to open it
- Find the device storage option under Local Storage which is your phone and MicroSD card
- Tap on the SD card, if you can view it, then it’s properly mounted, if not, pull it out and insert it back properly
Format SD card
Formatting your SD card will erase files and data from the card so back up your stuff and then do the following:
- Tap Apps icon on home screen
- Press Settings
- Scroll down to Storage and tap the SD card
- From the two Unmount or Format options, select Format
- The process will take time so you can come back when it’s done to check if it works again
Try another device
If your MicroSD card isn’t working on your Android device, try it on a different device to rule out firmware issues or issues with the card itself. Turn off your device and remove the card, and then insert in your laptop or computer, or another phone to see if it works. Backup your data and format the card again and check on your device. If it behaves the same across devices, then the card is faulty and you can replace it.
Update your device
If all the above solutions didn’t work and the issue persists, update your device using the most recent firmware available. Some cards are more problematic than others, so if there’s a software update, use it to resolve the issue.
Try each of these steps one after another and if none works at all, visit your device manufacturer or an Android repair expert, or just get a new MicroSD card.
