Although we have just seen the first foldable phone from Samsung at their event, the company is working on two more foldable designs. These two phones will follow Galaxy Fold and help the company lead this market segment.
According to a recent report, the manufacturer is already developing two different folding devices – one clamshell-like and another one that folds similarly as the Mate X does. The sources familiar with these projects remained anonymous, not saying how much the phones would cost, but claiming that one of the phones might be revealed at the end of this year or early next year.
The vertical folding phone might be the one that gets released first, and it should have an extra screen on the outside only if the Galaxy Fold’s cover display gets a positive response from the users.
As for the other device that folds toward outside might be the next-gen Galaxy Fold, and it is said to already exist as a prototype. This design will be thinner, as it doesn’t have that extra screen.
We should also see the new in-display fingerprint sensor in the next foldable phones as they did with the Galaxy S10.
The Galaxy Fold Display Will Get Creased, But You Might Replace It For Free
The Galaxy Fold will also be improved in terms of durability of the display. The panel will get creased after being folded for almost 10,000 – and Samsung is offering to replace the screens for the users for free.
Bloomberg’s source also added that this was why the Fold was kept inside a glass case at MWC:
The Galaxy Fold’s screen imperfection develops on a protective film covering the touch sensor bonded with the display underneath, the person said. That’s one reason why Samsung kept the phone inside a glass case at MWC in Barcelona last month, the person said. Samsung’s spokeswoman said the Galaxy Fold was displayed that way because it wanted more attention on the soon-to-be-launched Galaxy S10, not because there was a problem with the quality of the foldable device.
Samsung worked on the Galaxy Fold for eight years, and Google also teamed up with the manufacturer to make an adaptable Android OS for the foldable screen. In the future, we will also see rollable or stretchable displays, according to Chung Eui-suk, the Executive Vice President at Samsung.
This year, Samsung plans to make more than one million Galaxy Fold devices. The company also makes foldable displays and sells them to Apple.
