Android 9.0 Pie Drains the Battery of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9

Receiving a new operating system update is usually great news. Unfortunately for Galaxy S8 and S9 users, this wasn’t the case for Google’s latest Android 9.0 Pie update. Instead of introducing a plethora of features and improving the performances of Galaxy S8 and S9, the new operating system introduce an issue which causes the battery of the two smartphones to drain.

Battery Drain Issue

The worst thing about this issue is that Samsung has yet to acknowledge this issue, even though Android forums such as XDA are filled with complaints. The bug causes the battery of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 to randomly drop by up to 50%. This is a big issue and Google or Samsung needs to release an OTA (over the air) software fix.

Quick Fixes

The only fixes that Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 can try right now are factory resets and uninstalling problematic apps. Some user reports have shown that the affected smartphones stopped having battery drain issues after a couple of reboots.

Furthermore, there are some apps which use up too much battery power than they should and they can be spotted by following the next steps: Settings – Device Care – Battery. All that is left now is for users to pick the apps which are draining the battery and to force stop or uninstall them.

Not the First Time

We need to mention that this is not the first time that Samsung’s smartphones have been having battery issues after receiving a major operating system update. Therefore, we believe that this issue is caused by Samsung and not by Google.

Samsung usually fixed the battery drain on other smartphones through monthly security updates. With that said, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 users should expect the battery drain issue to be fixed before March comes around.
