Xiaomi’s Mi 9 Revealed at China’s Event: An Impressive Flagship at Half the Price

The past week has been filled with teases from Xiaomi on Twitter, slowly revealing the Xiaomi Mi 9 and its features. A few hours ago, the company finally revealed the phone at an event in China, and they will also make an appearance on 24 February at the MWC 2019.

Let’s see what the Mi 9 features in terms of specs, design, display and other options. Can it hold its own against other smartphones? What regions will get the Mi 9?

Xiaomi Mi9 Specs, Features, Prices

Let’s start with the bad news: Xiaomi will not sell phones in the US. They do plan to release the Mi 9 in Europe and several other regions where they already sell their phones – China already has the Mi 9 on the market.

Now looking at the Mi9 and comparing it with the Mi8, we will see a bump in specs and camera features, but also in the new design on the rear. The phone comes in blue or black, and the Chinese market also gets a limited model which features a transparent back that simulates chips – similar to the Mi8 Pro from 2018.

The Mi9 comes with a Snapdragon 855 and it two versions: 6 GB RAM or 12 GB RAM and up to 256GB internal storage. The chip from Qualcomm makes Xiaomi among the first companies to use this product this early. Although rumored, the Mi 9 won’t support 5G.

It will come with a 6.39-inch OLED display (1080 pixels) and has a notch cut for the camera. Under the screen, it has an optical fingerprint scanner.

The most important feature in this smartphone is the triple camera system on the rear, says Android Central. The Xiaomi flagship has a 48 MP Sony sensor, the one we find in Honor View 20. It has a 12 MP telephoto lens for 2x zoom and a 12 MP super wide camera to take photos with a wide angle.

Xiaomi claims that the Mi 9 is better than the iPhone XS Max at taking photos and DxOMark tests prove it – getting a photo score of 112, an overall score of 107, beating the Google Pixel 3 (101 points) and the Galaxy Note 9 (103 points).

“Charge Turbo” is a nifty way to wireless charging your phone fast at 20W – a full charge will take one hour and 40 minutes. The wired charging mode on the 27W charging brick will fully charge the 3,300mAh battery in a little over an hour

Xiaomi Mi9 Vs. OnePlus 6T and Honor View 20

The extra features and the impressive camera setup, as well as the high-performance Snapdragon 855, and the whopping 12 GB RAM makes Xiaomi Mi 9 a tough competitor against OnePlus 6T and Honor View 20, and it should be cheaper than them.

For now, the Mi 9’s price in China starts at almost $450 for the 6GB (128GB internal storage) model and goes up to nearly $600 for the transparent, limited edition Mi 9 which has 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage.

There is also a mid-range Mi9 – the Mi9 SE which is a little smaller (5.97-inches screen) and comes with a Snapdragon 712 processor with 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, at a price of almost $300.
