Here’s How Pokémon Go Managed to Make Almost $800M Last Year

Only two years after its release back in 2016, Pokémon Go managed to make $795 million in 2018, which is 35 percent more than how much the game made a year before that. No one can argue that it’s quite an impressive number. So how exactly was this possible? Let’s also not forget that we’re talking about a free game that doesn’t sell anything that special or expensive, compared to other popular games.

How did Pokémon Go achieve its success?

Let’s take a look at how Niantic managed to keep people interested in this popular augmented reality mobile game for such a long time. First of all, the company clearly kept their promise about what they wanted to deliver to their fans, even though a new Harry Potter game is also in the making. Niantic knew how to keep existing players engaged and how to attract new ones as well. This was achieved by adding new features, such as the PvP trainer battles, the research quests, the friend system and the trading.

That’s not all, however. New generations of Pokémon have also been launched and there was a lot of cross-promotion with Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee.

Engagement was also increased with numerous events and Community Days

But there are still more things that certainly kept the fans excited, especially in 2018. Compared to 2017, when the game only had 10 events in total, last year we’ve had 12 Community Days, 31 events and 4 special raiding days in Pokémon Go. This is most likely the reason why the game became so successful. The company simply knew how to keep its audience engaged and that’s a huge thing. Still, taking into consideration how Pokémon Go is monetized, it’s even more incredible to see how much the game earned in such a short amount of time. Who knows what this year will bring?
