A recent report by The Washington Post’s journalist Geoffrey A. Fowler gives us an unexpected conclusion that some of the most recent smartphones have shorter battery life than their predecessors. The research was conducted through a series of tests on some of the most popular devices, including those that run Android and iOS.
Older doesn’t necessarily mean worse
Most of us would normally think that the newest smartphones should surely have better battery life than the older models. However, the new report shows that, in some cases, it is the older device that can be used for a longer period of time without the need to charge it.
When it comes to Android, the tests proved that Google Pixel 3’s battery life was shorter than those of Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. Still, the report found that Google Pixel 3 XL performed better than these two Pixels of the second-generation. In the case of Apple’s devices, the iPhone X managed to beat the iPhone XS. However, the true winner of this competition is the iPhone 8 Plus, as it proved to be better than both iPhone XS and XS Max.
The newest phones usually have longer battery lives
Talking about the best performers, Apple’s iPhone XR has the longest battery life, with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 being just a little bit worse. Overall though, other than the examples of the Pixels and iPhones, the more recent smartphones tend to have a longer battery life than their older versions. Another conclusion that we can draw from the report is that bigger phones have longer life than smaller ones, as their battery is also bigger.
In his tests, Fowler measured the brightness level of every device using a light meter, then he made them scroll through the websites continuously thanks to a special script.
